Controversial Orange Order parade in Northern Ireland blocked by counter-protesters

Tensions persist in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after police halted a contentious Orange Order parade when thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road. An early-morning Belfast High Court ruling had upheld a decision by the Parades Commission permitting 35 members of the Protestant order to conduct a silent march, marking the first time the procession was allowed along the predominantly nationalist flashpoint since the late 1990s.
Police stopped the marchers near Drumcree Church as large crowds gathered, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill. The designated time window passed while organizers held discussions, leaving the march unable to proceed. Both demonstrators and parade members remained in the area as authorities monitored the situation and appealed for calm.
