Russian offensive stalls on frontline as grid attacks escalate ahead of winter
Russian ground advances in Ukraine have stalled, prompting Moscow to intensify long-range missile and drone strikes against energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
Russian ground operations in Ukraine have stalled, with independent mapping projects showing virtually zero net territorial changes through late September despite claims of progress from Moscow. Data from military analysts indicates that minor Russian advances in late summer were offset by localized Ukrainian counterattacks, including sustained efforts near Oleksandrivka.
As land offensives slow, Russian forces have escalated long-range aerial bombardments targeting Ukraine's power and heating infrastructure ahead of the cold season. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhij Koreckyj confirmed that recent strikes marked the largest coordinated effort against energy facilities since last winter, with President Volodymyr Zelensky identifying targets in the Kyiv region as primary objectives. Concurrently, Ukrainian air defense interception rates for incoming drones fell from 92 percent in May to 83 percent in September.
