Former German intelligence chief August Hanning arrested on espionage charges
Former German intelligence chief August Hanning and his ex-office manager remain in custody following their arrest on espionage and treason charges.
German federal prosecutors have formally arrested August Hanning, the former president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), alongside his former office manager, Manfred D., on espionage and treason charges.
Hanning, who led the foreign intelligence agency from 1998 to 2005, is accused of illegally acquiring state secrets provided by Manfred D. after completing his civil service. Investigators allege Hanning utilized the classified material to prepare strategic analyses for an undisclosed foreign intelligence agency. Reporting indicates the foreign power involved is not Russia.
The 80-year-old former spymaster faces charges including treasonous espionage, investigating state secrets, and acting on behalf of a foreign entity. Both suspects remain in custody while federal investigations proceed.
