Flávio Bolsonaro leads Brazil's presidential election into runoff
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro takes a first-round lead over incumbent President Lula da Silva in Brazil's general election, defying polls to set up an October 25 runoff.
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro secured an unexpected lead over incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of Brazil's general election on Sunday. With over 92% of the ballots counted, Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party garnered 47.89% of the vote against Lula's 44.15%, setting up a runoff scheduled for October 25.
The preliminary outcome contradicted most pre-election polling, which had consistently projected the 80-year-old Workers' Party leader in the lead. Since Brazil's return to democracy, no candidate leading after the first round has lost the runoff presidential election. Over 158 million citizens were eligible to cast mandatory ballots in the election, which also determined state governorships and congressional seats.
