UN reaches milestone on autonomous weapons as Germany outlines AI strategy
128 UN member states agreed on a definition for autonomous weapons, while Germany outlined its operational rules for semi-autonomous systems.
During negotiations in Geneva, 128 United Nations member states agreed on an official definition for autonomous weapon systems. Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen welcomed the milestone, while the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross warned that machine targeting of humans risks crossing "a moral red line."
Concurrently, Germany's Ministry of Defence clarified its operational stance, stating that while humans maintain ultimate decision-making authority over military force, specific AI-assisted semi-autonomous functions may execute without direct human intervention depending on the scenario. To safeguard data sovereignty, the Bundeswehr declined to contract American analytics provider Palantir, choosing instead to develop a custom internal AI platform for military data processing and decision support.
