Tensions rise in Strait of Hormuz following retaliatory strikes between US and Iran
Recent military exchanges near the Strait of Hormuz threaten a fragile June ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran.
Military exchanges near the Strait of Hormuz have heightened security concerns after Iranian forces launched retaliatory strikes against maritime targets. According to Iranian state media, Tehran targeted six vessels—including three oil tankers and a US aircraft carrier—in response to recent American air raids. Onboard fires on one damaged tanker were quickly extinguished.
US President Donald Trump downplayed the operational impact, asserting that navigation through the vital trade corridor remains open and arguing that Tehran faces "great difficulty." Conversely, American intelligence assessments suggest the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps views itself as strengthened, raising fears of potential further escalation. The renewed hostilities threaten the stability of the 14-point memorandum signed in June, which had established a fragile ceasefire following prior combat operations.
