Anti-fascist and pro-independence rallies in Barcelona lead to clashes and arrests

Demonstrations in Barcelona coinciding with Catalan National Day led to political schisms, anti-fascist protests against Vox, and 18 arrests following clashes with police.
Tensions flared in Barcelona as thousands gathered for various demonstrations, including the annual Catalan National Day rally. According to local police, around 45,000 people participated in the main independence march, which was marked by political divisions over the rise of far-right independence factions.
Concurrently, anti-fascist demonstrators protested an event held by the right-wing Vox party and its leader, Santiago Abascal. Although police cordons prevented protesters from reaching the venue, violent unrest broke out later in the evening. Authorities reported 18 arrests, including ten minors, while nine police officers sustained minor injuries during clashes involving thrown objects and burning containers. Severe weather also forced the cancellation of at least one planned demonstration.
