Russia and Ukraine trade overnight strikes ahead of US peace talks
Russia and Ukraine launched new strikes against each other overnight despite reported commitments to pause capital attacks during upcoming diplomatic visits by U.S. peace envoys.
Cross-border strikes between Russia and Ukraine persisted overnight despite commitments by both sides to pause attacks on Moscow and Kyiv during visits by U.S. peace envoys this weekend. Russian missile and drone bombardments across several Ukrainian regions, including Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, resulted in at least four fatalities and multiple injuries. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reported targeting a Russian oil refinery, alongside drone strikes in Sochi and the Belgorod region.
The escalated military activity comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares to travel to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed both nations agreed to halt energy infrastructure attacks. However, Kyiv emphasized that any freeze remains contingent on Western security guarantees.
