Tensions rise near Strait of Hormuz as US and Iran trade strikes
U.S. and Iranian forces have exchanged direct strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides reporting vessel engagements and retaliatory missile attacks.
Military friction between the United States and Iran has intensified near the strategic Strait of Hormuz following recent reciprocal attacks. U.S. Central Command reported destroying five Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vessels after Iranian forces attempted strikes on American naval ships. In response, Iranian forces fired 20 missiles targeting U.S. military bases in Jordan.
Iranian state media claimed Tehran successfully struck six maritime vessels, including three tankers and a U.S. aircraft carrier, though American officials reported no critical damage to warships. A commercial vessel caught fire during the engagements before its crew extinguished the blaze.
U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that the maritime shipping route remains open. Meanwhile, American intelligence officials warned that Iranian forces could further escalate hostilities as clashes continue.
