US implements 50 percent tariffs on Canada following collapse of trade talks
Trade talks between the US and Canada have collapsed, triggering 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports and immediate reciprocal retaliation from Ottawa.
Cross-border negotiations between the United States and Canada over trade policy have collapsed without reaching an agreement, leading Washington to enact 50 percent tariffs on selected Canadian goods. The punitive measures, which affect an estimated 20 billion to 28 billion dollars in imports, took effect overnight and mark the first time tariffs apply to products previously covered under North American free trade terms.
In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of bilateral discussions and confirmed that Ottawa will impose equivalent retaliatory tariffs to protect domestic workers and businesses. Both governments traded blame for the breakdown in negotiations following the expiration of a deadline set by US President Donald Trump, signaling a sharp escalation in trade friction between the two allies.
