Croatian parliament debates hazardous waste scandal amid opposition push to unseat government
Croatian lawmakers debated hazardous waste dumping in Lika as the opposition launched a no-confidence push, while proceedings continued in Malta's Caruana Galizia murder trial.
Debate in the Croatian parliament extended into a second day during an extraordinary session convened at the request of President Zoran Milanović over the unlawful disposal of hazardous waste in the Lika region. The environmental crisis prompted the opposition Social Democratic Party to advance a no-confidence initiative against the governing coalition formed by the Croatian Democratic Union and the Homeland Movement.
In Valletta, jurors in the trial of businessman Yorgen Fenech heard evidence detailing Daphne Caruana Galizia's investigations into high-level government corruption prior to her 2017 assassination in a car bomb attack.
Meanwhile, the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026 highlighted that 63 percent of surveyed adults in Croatia occasionally or frequently avoid following the news, ranking the country among the highest globally alongside Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey.
