Baltic and Nordic officials warn of Russian election interference and escalating hybrid warfare tactics as tensions over sanctions and energy infrastructure persist.

European defense officials have intensified warnings regarding Russian hybrid activities, with Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur cautioning that upcoming elections across the Baltic Sea region face elevated risks of foreign interference. Pevkur stated that Moscow actively seeks opportunities to influence democratic societies ahead of votes in Sweden and neighboring nations.

The alert coincides with broader warnings from defense analysts and Swedish military leadership, who assess that Russian hybrid operations are entering a more dangerous phase. Experts point to risks spanning sabotage, cyber operations, and provocations designed to test NATO cohesion.

Meanwhile, friction over sanctions enforcement and energy infrastructure remains elevated. Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled European seizures of sanctions-evading oil tankers as piracy and warned of retaliation, which Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described as Kremlin frustration. Concurrently, Ukraine conducted long-range drone strikes against refineries deep within Russian territory.
