US deepens Ukraine defence ties as Trump faces domestic and security scrutiny
The United States expands defence ties with Ukraine while Donald Trump rejects reports of military ammunition shortages and addresses security protocols.
Relations between the United States and Ukraine have shifted following earlier tensions in the Oval Office, progressing toward enhanced defence cooperation that includes licensing for domestic manufacturing of Patriot air defence systems. Observers attribute Washington's policy pivot partly to Ukraine's ability to conduct long-range strikes into Russian territory.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump denied reports alleging American ammunition shortages linked to operations involving Iran, warning anonymous government leakers of prosecution and imprisonment. Trump also confirmed that he covertly swapped aircraft upon departing a NATO summit in Ankara due to Iranian threats, while downplaying risks to personnel left on Air Force One.
Domestically, stringent immigration enforcement has resulted in detentions affecting families of Trump's past supporters. Concurrently, European allies voiced concern over reports indicating future US troop deployments abroad might be conditioned on political alignment with Washington.
