Middle East tensions flare as US-Iran ceasefire lapses
Middle East tensions escalated as the 60-day US-Iran ceasefire expired, sparking standoffs over the Strait of Hormuz and strikes across the region.
Regional hostilities have intensified following the expiration of the 60-day truce between the United States and Iran established under the Islamabad memorandum.
US President Donald Trump claimed Washington holds control over the Strait of Hormuz, asserting the strategic corridor could soon be designated American territory. In response, Tehran has maintained maritime pressure to demand sanctions relief and the unfreezing of foreign assets.
The confrontation has widened across multiple fronts. Air defenses intercepted two Iranian missiles over Dubai, while Houthi militants launched fresh strikes on Yemen's port of Al Makha. In the Gulf of Oman, US forces opened fire on the container vessel Vela Nova for allegedly attempting to breach transit restrictions. Meanwhile, Iranian officials identified Israel as the main obstacle to diplomatic progress.
