US and Iran escalate standoff over Strait of Hormuz as truce expires
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated over the Strait of Hormuz following the expiration of the 60-day truce, accompanied by maritime strikes and diplomatic friction.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated following the expiration of the 60-day truce established under the June Islamabad memorandum. Iranian officials declared that the Strait of Hormuz will stay closed until the United States lifts economic sanctions, unfreezes foreign assets, and halts operations against allied regional groups. Reports also indicate Tehran placed bounties on American military personnel.
US President Donald Trump asserted that American forces maintain control over the waterway, reiterating distrust toward Iranian leadership. Meanwhile, regional military actions continued. US naval units fired upon the container ship Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman for allegedly breaching transit restrictions, while Houthi forces launched fresh strikes on Yemen's port of Al Makha. Concurrently, diplomatic friction emerged as Washington criticized Israeli intentions to keep troops deployed across southern Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza.
