German authorities raise alarm over Russian hybrid threats and election interference
German security agencies warn of over 100 suspected foreign sabotage incidents and coordinated disinformation campaigns targeting mainstream candidates ahead of state elections.
German law enforcement and intelligence agencies are warning of intensifying Russian hybrid operations designed to disrupt infrastructure and sway upcoming state elections.
Authorities across federal states suspect foreign state involvement in more than 100 incidents, ranging from critical transport sabotage to illicit drone activity over military and transport sites. Concurrently, security officials report widespread digital disinformation operations. Coordinated networks using manipulated videos and spoofed media outlets are attempting to discredit candidates from mainstream democratic parties, including the SPD, CDU, Greens, and FDP, ahead of regional votes.
Officials assess that the combined physical disruptions and targeted digital disinformation represent a concerted strategy to polarise the electorate, erode institutional trust, and destabilise the political climate.
