EU to hold emergency meeting on Ceuta migration crisis amid political rifts
The EU will hold emergency talks on Tuesday as Spain faces political pressure and a rising death toll following the arrival of 60,000 migrants in Ceuta.
The situation in the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta has stabilized after approximately 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco, though authorities confirmed the death toll has risen to 67.
Ahead of an emergency European Union interior ministers' meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 22 member states signed a joint letter demanding stricter external border enforcement. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned these measures, calling the responses "selfish, polarising and unlawful" while facing deepening political isolation across Europe. Domestically, friction persists within Madrid, where cabinet divisions have emerged between the Interior and Defense ministries over policy regarding Morocco.
Simultaneously, EU officials warned that Russian digital networks are conducting hybrid warfare operations to amplify the political fallout across member states.
