EU interior ministers to convene following deadly Ceuta migration surge
EU interior ministers will hold emergency talks on Tuesday after 60,000 migrants entered Ceuta and the drowning death toll rose to 67.
The situation in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has stabilized after an estimated 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco, though the confirmed drowning death toll has risen to 67, according to Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
European Union interior ministers will hold emergency talks on Tuesday following a joint demand from 22 member states for coordinated action and reinforced external borders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen authorized the session after calling the uncontrolled influx "unacceptable."
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the surge violated Spain's territorial integrity and confirmed plans to deport migrants back to Morocco. Sánchez also firmly rejected calls from some member states to suspend Schengen arrangements, criticizing such proposals as "selfish, polarising and unlawful."
