US Senate advances Russia sanctions as Ukrainian drone strikes escalate
US Senate advances Russia energy sanctions as Trump pledges Patriot manufacturing licenses to Ukraine amid expanding drone strikes and North Korean troop warnings.
The US Senate has voted 86–12 to advance a major sanctions package targeting Russia's energy sector. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the Capitol vote before meeting US President Donald Trump, who pledged licenses allowing Ukraine to manufacture Patriot air-defense interceptor missiles domestically.
Concurrently, Ukraine has intensified its long-range drone campaign. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that over 390 drones were intercepted overnight, though Ukrainian reports indicate an industrial steel mill near the capital was struck. Additional drone strikes against logistics hubs belonging to Russian online retailer Wildberries have caused an estimated $1.3 billion in economic damage.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy warned that Moscow plans to recruit 30,000 North Korean personnel for deployment in the Voronezh region, along with acquiring new ballistic missile launchers from Pyongyang.
