Zelensky warns airlines against using Russian airspace as long-range strikes escalate

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a warning to international airlines and insurance providers that Russian airspace is "becoming completely unsafe" due to intensifying long-range Ukrainian drone strikes. While Zelensky specified that Ukrainian forces will not target civilian passenger airliners, he cautioned that operating near key Russian aviation hubs carries growing risks.

The warning comes as fighting along the front lines continues to place heavy pressure on Ukrainian forces. Ukrainian military commanders are working to halt Russian advances while conserving personnel, as manpower shortages remain a critical vulnerability ahead of potential further Russian mobilization. Simultaneously, both belligerents are expanding their deployment of uncrewed aerial vehicles and cruise missiles. However, Ukrainian defensive operations remain hampered by critical shortages of air defense interceptor missiles needed to counter deep Russian strikes.
