European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for greater strategic independence and economic competitiveness in her sixth State of the Union address.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered her sixth State of the Union address in Brussels, describing the European Union as stronger yet "more vulnerable than ever." Framing current geopolitical challenges alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's visit, she urged the bloc to strengthen its independence across defense, technology, and energy sectors amid growing competition from global powers like China and the United States.

Her speech emphasized establishing a "new European security architecture," reforming migration policies, and improving economic competitiveness to make Europe a place where it is "easy to do business, easy to invest and easy to scale up." Von der Leyen also called for urgent climate adaptation, pointing to recent environmental disasters including wildfires in Croatia.
