US threatens sweeping sanctions on Iran to isolate regime

The U.S. is preparing severe new sanctions against Iran to cut off financial access, sending the Iranian rial to an all-time low against the dollar.
The United States is preparing to launch new economic sanctions against Iran intended to sever Tehran from global commerce and financial networks. Speaking on the measures, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated Washington aims to "collapse this regime" by targeting international entities facilitating Iranian trade and financial transactions. Bessent urged foreign allies to back the strategy, issuing an ultimatum that nations are "either with us or against us."
The announcement follows warnings from President Donald Trump of an impending economic confrontation. Following the administration's statements, the Iranian rial fell to a record low of 1.992 million per dollar on informal markets. U.S. officials suggested that intensified economic isolation could diminish the necessity for future large-scale military operations in the region.
