The United States has implemented 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods following the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations, prompting Canada to prepare reciprocal retaliatory measures.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have collapsed, prompting Washington to enact 50 percent tariffs on a broad range of Canadian imports. The duties, affecting between $20 billion and $28 billion in goods, mark a significant escalation in cross-border economic friction and include categories previously covered by regional free trade provisions.

In response to the US decision, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney halted bilateral talks and announced that Ottawa will impose equivalent retaliatory measures to protect domestic workers and businesses. Both governments have assigned responsibility to the opposing side for the failure to secure a negotiated settlement following days of discussions.
