The US has enacted 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports after trade talks collapsed, prompting Canada to announce equal retaliatory measures.

Bilateral trade discussions between the United States and Canada have collapsed without an agreement, leading Washington to enforce 50 percent tariffs on selected Canadian goods. The levies, which affect an estimated $20 billion to $28 billion in cross-border trade, apply to multiple products, including items previously protected under regional free trade provisions.

Following the expiry of a deadline set by the US administration, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of further negotiations. Carney confirmed that Ottawa will implement reciprocal tariffs of matching financial value to protect domestic companies and workers. The moves mark a sharp escalation in commercial friction between the two North American allies, with both governments attributing the impasse to the other side.
