The US has enacted 50% tariffs on billions in Canadian goods following failed trade talks, prompting Ottawa to suspend negotiations and announce equivalent reciprocal measures.

The United States has enacted 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports following the breakdown of bilateral trade negotiations. The duties, taking effect overnight after a deadline set by the Trump administration expired, target an estimated $20 billion to $28 billion worth of Canadian products, including goods previously protected under regional free trade accords.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of further talks and confirmed that Ottawa will implement retaliatory tariffs of equivalent financial value to shield domestic industries and workers. The collapse of the three-day discussions marks a significant escalation in cross-border trade friction, with both governments attributing responsibility for the impasse to the other side.
