The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods following the collapse of bilateral trade talks, prompting Canada to prepare equal retaliatory countermeasures.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have officially broken down, prompting Washington to implement 50% punitive tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports. The new duties, which took effect following the expiration of a White House deadline, target between $20 billion and $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, including categories previously shielded under North American free trade provisions.

In response to the US measures, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of further discussions and pledged that Ottawa would introduce matching reciprocal penalties on American products. Both governments have traded blame for the collapse of the three-day negotiation process, marking a significant escalation in economic friction between the historic allies.
