The United States has implemented 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods after bilateral negotiations failed, prompting Ottawa to announce equivalent retaliatory duties.

The United States has instituted 50 percent tariffs on selected Canadian imports following the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations, marking a sharp escalation in economic tensions between the long-standing allies. The newly enacted duties target between $20 billion and $28 billion in Canadian goods, extending for the first time to products previously covered under regional free trade provisions.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended ongoing discussions and announced that Ottawa will impose equivalent reciprocal measures to protect domestic businesses and workers. Both governments have assigned blame to each other for the failure to reach a negotiated settlement following days of talks.
