Canada has unveiled dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on $20 billion of US imports after trade talks with Washington collapsed.

Cross-border trade tensions between the United States and Canada have escalated into an open trade war following the failure of bilateral negotiations. In response to 50 percent import duties imposed by US President Donald Trump on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, Ottawa announced matching countermeasures covering nearly C$28 billion ($20 billion) in American products.

The Canadian retaliatory tariffs, reaching up to 50 percent, target US items such as steel, apparel, furniture, and agricultural goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Ottawa would match the levies "dollar for dollar" while providing assistance to domestic enterprises and workers affected by the fallout. The initial US duties affect approximately five percent of Canada's annual exports to the United States. President Trump has threatened further tariff hikes if the dispute remains unresolved.
