The US and Canada have enacted 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of each other's goods after bilateral trade negotiations collapsed.

Tensions between the United States and Canada have heightened following the breakdown of trade negotiations, leading to steep tariffs from both nations. Washington implemented 50 percent duties on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports on Saturday, affecting about five percent of Canada's annual exports to the US. Affected items span manufactured goods ranging from medical equipment to hockey sticks.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade talks and announced retaliatory measures. Ottawa introduced counter-tariffs of up to 50 percent targeting nearly C$28 billion ($20 billion) in American imports, including steel, apparel, furniture, and agricultural products. The Canadian government is also deploying financial assistance packages to protect domestic businesses and workers from economic disruption. US President Donald Trump cautioned that additional levies could be introduced if the dispute remains unresolved.
