The United States has implemented 50% import tariffs on Canadian goods after bilateral negotiations collapsed, prompting Canada to prepare equal retaliatory duties.

Trade negotiations between the United States and Canada have officially broken down, prompting Washington to implement 50% punitive tariffs on a wide array of Canadian goods. The measures took effect overnight following the expiration of a deadline set by the US administration, impacting imports estimated between $20 billion and $28 billion and extending to products previously covered under free trade provisions.

In response to the collapse of discussions, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of bilateral talks and confirmed that Ottawa will enact reciprocal tariffs of equal financial magnitude to protect domestic industries and workers. Both governments have traded blame for the deadlock, marking a major escalation in trade tensions between the long-standing North American allies.
