Ukraine expands domestic weapon projects amid air defense shortages

Ukraine is expanding domestic defense manufacturing, including glide bomb kits and ballistic missiles, to offset air defense shortages and reduce reliance on foreign military aid.
Ukraine is attempting to bridge a critical air defense gap as domestic assembly of U.S.-licensed Patriot systems remains years away due to licensing hurdles and bureaucratic delays. With Russia escalating ballistic missile strikes against infrastructure, Ukrainian forces face severe interceptor shortages.
To address these vulnerabilities, two domestic companies are developing native ballistic missiles, though technical obstacles delay mass production. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s armed forces are acquiring the locally produced "Equalizer" kit, developed by DG Industry and Brave1. The technology converts conventional unguided bombs into long-range precision glide munitions, compatible with both Soviet-era jets and Western fighters like the F-16 and Mirage. The initiative seeks to alleviate critical defense deficits while reducing long-term dependence on Western military supplies.
