United States President Donald Trump announced a three-day delay on implementing 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, stating that both nations have reached a preliminary agreement.
The decision was revealed late Tuesday, just hours before the punitive duties on billions of dollars worth of Canadian products were scheduled to take effect. Trump stated on social media that the suspension was granted because the United States and Canada, "subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!"
The planned duties had threatened to escalate bilateral trade tensions and impact cross-border commerce. Negotiators from both sides are working to conclude the formal texts of the accord before the temporary reprieve expires.
