Thousands enter Ceuta from Morocco as European leaders respond

A massive migrant influx into Spain's Ceuta enclave triggers diplomatic friction within the EU and sharp questions over border security.
Thousands of migrants entered the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco, largely by swimming around coastal barriers. Media reporting varied significantly on the scale of the influx, with estimates ranging from 20,000 to 60,000 arrivals over a 24-hour period. Drowning fatalities were reported between 34 and over 40.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged to deport arrivals, calling the situation a "violation of territorial integrity." European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the influx "unacceptable." Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced intentions to push for Spain’s temporary suspension from the Schengen border-free zone. Spanish reports noted that border control faced initial chaos, operating with just 55 frontline officers when the wave began.
