Donald Trump downplayed the urgency of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, even as Iranian officials reiterated that the strategic passage will remain closed until US policies change.

US President Donald Trump has downplayed the urgency of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, characterising the strategic standoff as "like a game of chess." Speaking as maritime traffic fell another 20 percent following a ship attack, Trump claimed the waterway remains "open and operational" while stating there are no formal negotiations planned with Tehran. He warned that no supplies would reach Iran without an explicit agreement or surrender, and cautioned against interference from Tehran or Muscat.

Iran reiterated that the passage will remain closed until US foreign policy changes, rejecting direct negotiations with Washington. However, Iranian officials continue bilateral discussions with Oman to establish secure shipping channels. Despite the impasse, Trump suggested a potential breakthrough could happen rapidly, even as Tehran threatens offensive action if diplomatic channels fail.
