Spanish central and local authorities remain divided over migrant numbers in Ceuta as deaths reach 88 and military border returns cause political friction.

Disagreements persist between Spanish central and local authorities following the recent border crisis in Ceuta. Regional President Juan Vivas estimated Thursday's crossings reached up to 80,000 people, whereas central government delegates report 2,500 migrants remaining in the territory, compared to local estimates of 6,000.

The Guardia Civil has established a specialized missing persons unit as the local death toll rose to 88. Simultaneously, political tensions have emerged between Spain's Interior and Defense ministries over military personnel returning migrants to the border. In Madrid, a National Security Department communications official was dismissed for "loss of trust" after an online alert claimed 49,000 people crossed.
