Spanish and Moroccan officials navigate political fallout and conflicting statistics after thousands attempted to enter Ceuta and Melilla.

Spanish and Moroccan authorities are managing the political and administrative aftermath of a major migration influx into Ceuta and Melilla, amidst wide discrepancies in official figures.

Morocco reported that approximately 40,000 people attempted to reach Ceuta and acknowledged 11 deaths on its territory. Conversely, local officials in Ceuta estimated between 72,000 and 80,000 arrivals, reporting up to 88 fatalities. To assist affected families, Spain's Guardia Civil established a specialized office to process missing persons reports.

The crisis has also triggered political friction in Madrid. Spain's central government dismissed a communications official in the National Security Department over an unauthorized publication citing 49,000 entries, citing a loss of trust. Disagreements have also surfaced between Spain's Interior and Defense ministries concerning military border deployments and return protocols.
