Spain and Morocco boost Ceuta security ahead of feared mass crossing

Spain and Morocco reinforce Ceuta border security amid viral online calls for a new mass crossing on 15 August following deadly July attempts.
Spain and Morocco have stepped up security around the North African enclave of Ceuta following widespread social media campaigns urging a coordinated mass border crossing on 15 August.
The measures follow late July's influx, during which distorted legal rulings and false online claims prompted tens of thousands to attempt entry. While most individuals subsequently returned across the border, official reports indicate that dozens drowned, with casualty estimates ranging from 72 to more than 100, leaving hundreds stranded along the coastline.
In response, Moroccan authorities detained several suspects accused of inciting the crossings online. On the Spanish side, officials deployed extra police units, cancelled military leaves, and fortified perimeter fencing. Meanwhile, Ceuta residents face persistent local strain amid ongoing political friction and emergency conditions.
