Spain and Ceuta clash over migrant numbers as security forces prepare for new crossings

Spanish authorities and Ceuta officials disagree on remaining migrant figures as security forces prepare for potential new arrivals on August 15.
Spanish central authorities and local leaders in Ceuta remain divided over the scale of recent migrant crossings via the El Tarajal breakwater. Central government officials estimate 2,500 individuals, including 500 unaccompanied minors, currently remain in the enclave. In contrast, local figures report 6,000, while Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas previously suggested arrivals reached 80,000.
The situation has triggered administrative strain in Madrid. A National Security Department communications staff member was dismissed after publishing an unverified figure of 49,000 arrivals, while friction has surfaced between the Interior and Defense ministries over security operations. Meanwhile, security forces are bracing for possible future breaches after a Guardia Civil report warned of a "real risk" of another mass crossing on August 15.
