Independent tracking shows Russian territorial gains stalled through September, while Moscow intensified air strikes on Ukraine's energy grid ahead of winter.

Russian territorial progress in Ukraine remained virtually stagnant through late September, according to independent mapping data. While Moscow claimed battlefield successes, tracking from the Institute for the Study of War and Ukrainian project DeepState indicated near-zero net territorial changes over a four-week period. Analysis from the Black Bird Group noted that Russian forces seized roughly 133 square kilometers in August, but localized Ukrainian counter-attacks—including around Oleksandrivka—recaptured ground.

Concurrently, Russian operations shifted heavily toward long-range bombardments of Ukraine's power and heating facilities ahead of winter. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhij Koreckyj warned that recent overnight strikes targeting energy infrastructure in Kyiv were the largest since last spring. The systematic targeting coincides with a drop in Ukrainian air defense efficiency, with drone interception rates falling from 92 percent in May to 83 percent in September.
