Five years after the Taliban returned to power, Afghanistan faces severe human rights rollbacks and humanitarian strain as aid arrives and regional rights concerns grow.

Five years after the Taliban's takeover of Kabul, Afghanistan continues to confront an intensifying humanitarian and human rights emergency, with women bearing the heaviest toll.

Investigations into more than 200 femicide cases reveal widespread impunity for perpetrators following the 2023 abolition of the attorney general's office, which previously tracked such crimes. Alongside institutional curbs on female employment and mobility, nearly 40 percent of Afghans now require urgent humanitarian relief. To alleviate shortages, the United Nations confirmed that an international convoy of over 700 aid trucks crossed from Pakistan despite border closures.

Meanwhile, rights monitors in neighbouring Iran reported the execution of 24-year-old Marzieh Neyri, who had resisted sexual abuse, highlighting stringent legal hurdles confronting domestic violence victims under Islamic retribution laws.
