Water levels in the Rhine have hit their lowest point since 1880 at Kaub, with shipping groups warning the river could soon be split in two.

Water levels in major European rivers continue to plunge amid relentless summer heat, with the Rhine reaching its lowest recorded depth at Kaub since 1880. Hydrological authorities warn that conditions along the Rhine, Elbe, Danube, and Lake Constance are expected to deteriorate further without significant rainfall.

Commercial transport faces mounting strain. The Federal Association of German Inland Navigation warned that receding waters in the middle Rhine could soon prevent continuous navigation, effectively splitting the shipping route into two separate segments. Beyond logistics, prolonged dry conditions pose serious threats to groundwater supplies, drinking water reserves, and aquatic ecosystems. In several locations, drying riverbeds have uncovered historical artifacts, including ancient shipwrecks and mammoth bones.
