Pope Leo XIV is recovering smoothly at Rome's Gemelli Hospital following surgery to remove a lung tumor detected during a routine medical examination. Medical personnel reported that his post-operative progress is proceeding regularly, with hospital discharge expected within five to seven days.

While remaining in a private suite, the pontiff has begun walking, sitting in an armchair, concelebrating Mass, and receiving select visitors to manage essential Vatican administration. Public audiences remain suspended until October 20.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin described the initial news of the procedure as a "bolt from the blue," while expressing confidence in the Pope's recovery. Parolin suggested that future papal duties may need to be reshaped to accommodate health needs.
