Over 60 former Irish politicians and officials lobbied government, analysis finds

An analysis of Ireland's lobbying register reveals at least 63 former politicians and senior civil servants have lobbied current government officials since 2020.
An analysis of more than 83,000 lobbying register returns filed in Ireland since 2020 revealed that at least 63 former politicians and senior civil servants have lobbied active government officials. The findings highlight the prevalence of the "revolving door" practice, in which former public servants enter private-sector roles to advocate before their former colleagues and state institutions.
Although Ireland maintains ethical guidelines and designated cooling-off periods to mitigate potential conflicts of interest, register records document direct communications between former officials and active policymakers. The disclosures have reignited public debate over the effectiveness of existing regulations, sparking calls for stricter enforcement of post-employment restrictions and enhanced transparency surrounding lobbying practices across Irish public institutions.
