U.S. and Iranian leadership offer contrasting accounts of negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz while regional talks continue in Rome.

Diplomatic efforts regarding the Strait of Hormuz remain uncertain as Teheran and Washington issue contrasting signals. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed that negotiations mediated by Oman are near completion, yet maintained that the waterway will not reopen without U.S. sanctions relief, war reparations, and an end to military threats.

Conversely, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested a deal could materialize rapidly while simultaneously downplaying the crisis as a strategic game and warning Teheran of severe repercussions if maritime transit is hindered. Washington noted progress in Omani-mediated talks, though no formal agreement has been finalized.

Concurrently, a seventh round of talks between Israel and Lebanon commenced in Rome as roughly 800,000 displaced Lebanese citizens began returning south. In a separate incident off Yemen's coast, an Indian vessel was reportedly struck and sunk.
