Icelandic leaders set EU red lines and schedule town halls ahead of August vote

Icelandic leaders announce nationwide listening sessions and reaffirm key negotiating conditions on fisheries and agriculture ahead of the August 29 EU accession referendum.
Icelandic leadership is preparing for the August 29 national referendum on whether to resume European Union accession negotiations, balancing public outreach with strict diplomatic conditions.
Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir announced a series of nine public listening sessions across the country to discuss the upcoming vote with citizens. The tour begins in Reykjanesbær and concludes in Reykjavík on August 26, shortly before polling day.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir outlined non-negotiable terms for potential EU talks, stating that Iceland must retain complete sovereignty and control over its fisheries sector. Gunnarsdóttir also stressed the necessity of protecting domestic food security and upholding animal welfare standards in agriculture during any eventual discussions with Brussels.
