Icelandic political leaders are stepping up public outreach and defining key negotiating priorities ahead of the August 29 referendum on European Union accession talks.

Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir announced a series of nine town hall meetings across Iceland to consult voters leading up to the ballot. The tour begins in Reykjanesbær and is scheduled to conclude in Reykjavík shortly before the vote takes place.

Simultaneously, Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir emphasized critical conditions for any prospective membership terms. She stated that Iceland must retain full sovereignty and management over its fisheries sector, while also underscoring that agricultural arrangements must strictly safeguard national food security and animal welfare standards.
