France's Constitutional Council validated the end-of-life law and an agricultural bill while striking down a proposed social media ban for minors under 15.

France's Constitutional Council validated the nation's end-of-life legislation on Friday, while rejecting a proposed ban on social media access for minors under 15.

The high court ruled that the social media ban represented a restriction of "general scope" that excessively infringed upon personal freedoms, effectively invalidating a key digital initiative championed by President Emmanuel Macron. In contrast, the council upheld the assisted dying reform alongside an emergency agricultural bill. The end-of-life ruling included three interpretative reservations, notably establishing a conscience clause allowing private and religious healthcare facilities to decline performing assisted dying procedures.

Magistrates noted that on societal reforms of this scale, the council could not substitute its own judgment for that of lawmakers. President Macron welcomed the ruling, stating the decision completed an "exemplary democratic debate."
