Macron condemns 'unbridled violence' as France assesses protest fallout

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned "unbridled violence" after nationwide cost-of-living protests led to severe clashes, looting, and over 2,000 arrests across the country.
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned "unbridled violence" following nationwide protests over rising living costs and declining public services. The demonstrations, which drew between 550,000 and 800,000 participants on Saturday, led to clashes, arson, and looting in several cities. Security forces arrested over 2,000 people over the weekend as police fought looters and demonstrators for a second consecutive day in Paris.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened a crisis cabinet meeting on Monday to evaluate the fallout from what officials described as some of the worst street violence in recent French history. Addressing the nation, Macron promised that "full transparency will be ensured" regarding the government's response, while questioning how citizens could cause such destruction to public buildings and commercial storefronts.
