Former Ukrainian defense minister calls for post-martial law election prep

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for immediate legislative preparations to enable national elections as soon as martial law ends.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's former defense minister who was dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, has urged lawmakers to begin drafting legislation to facilitate national elections immediately following the termination of martial law.
While Ukrainian law currently prohibits holding elections during active martial law, debate is intensifying in Kyiv regarding post-war democratic processes. Organizing voting mechanisms for millions of refugees residing abroad and military personnel deployed along active front lines presents major logistical hurdles. Fedorov stressed that establishing a clear legal framework now is essential to guarantee a swift return to democratic procedures once hostilities cease.
