Political scholar Alpo Rusi details late Cold War KGB pressure targeting former Finnish Prime Minister Keijo Liinamaa during a key presidential transition period.

Political science scholar Alpo Rusi has outlined details regarding Soviet intelligence operations aimed at influencing Finnish political leadership transitions during the late Cold War. Writing in a guest column, Rusi examined threats directed at Keijo Liinamaa, a former Finnish prime minister and national conciliator, shortly before Liinamaa's death in December 1980.

According to the analysis, Soviet covert networks sought to exploit industrial labor disputes mediated by Liinamaa to create political instability. The operations were intended to shape Finnish domestic politics as President Urho Kekkonen approached the end of his tenure. Liinamaa had reportedly disclosed these pressure tactics to diplomatic contacts prior to his passing.
